Geographic patterns, however, were not the primary focus in any of these reviews. The opportunities and constraints on adventure tourism have been examined for particular geographic areas such as Nepal (Zurick, 1992), South Africa (Rogerson, 2007), the Mekong River Basin (Laws and Semone, 2009) and the polar regions (Snyder and Stonehouse, 2007). Small-scale geographic patterns at adventure tourism destinations have also received some attention. Cater (2006a), for example, pointed out that adventure tourism operations near Queenstown, New Zealand, are concentrated along particular corridors.

In some countries there are wars, active terrorists, local unrest, government bans on foreigners or high levels of criminal violence. Even adventure tourists are likely to avoid such destinations. As global political patterns change, therefore, particular countries that may offer the terrain and climate for specific adventure activities can move on and off the map of places which people actually want to visit. During Idi Amin’s violent dictatorship, for example, Uganda was largely off limits for tourists of any kind.

The majority of adventure tourism operators, however, are clustered near mainstream tourism gateways where there is a continual supply of clients. This reflects the overall structure of the adventure tourism sector, with a large number of high-volume, low-skill, lowprice, short-duration products on offer in accessible areas, and a small number of low-volume, high-skill, high-price, long-duration products in remote and less accessible areas. RESEARCH REVIEW The geography of adventure tourism deserves academic attention in the same way as the geography of tourism and recreation more generally (Higgins, 1996; Lew and Hall, 1998; Franklin and Crang, 2001; Butler, 2004; Hall and Page, 2006).
